Pension “buy back” opportunity for some NHS Pension Scheme Members

Following the McCloud judgment, certain members of the NHS Pension Scheme may now be eligible to “buy back” pensionable service for the period between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2022.

This opportunity is available to individuals who opted out of the Scheme during that timeframe due to the age discrimination identified in the 2015 pension reforms. For those affected, this presents a valuable chance to enhance their future pension benefits by repurchasing some or all of the previously opted-out service.

What You Need to Do

Step 1: Request a Quote from NHS Pensions
You will need to provide details of your opted-out service and employment history, including information from any relevant employers.

Step 2: Employer Input
Forward the form to your employer for completion. If you were employed by multiple organisations, each employer will need to submit a separate declaration.

Step 3: Receive Your Personal Illustration
Once NHS Pensions has all the completed information, they will calculate the cost and send you a tailored illustration outlining your options.

Step 4: Decide Whether to Proceed
Review the illustration carefully and decide whether you wish to make additional contributions to buy back the service.
